A ride and a pint: a very easy jaunt from Southwold to Walberswick

30 mins | Very easy

This is a casual ride – suitable for young kids – that runs through some typically beautiful Suffolk coastal scenery and away from any busy roads. You’ll start and finish in Southwold.

Start at the old garages near the Blyth Hotel in Southwold. Bike along Blyth Road, past the Southwold Railway Trust Steamworks (on your right). The golf course and common are on your left. Continue straight on to Palmer’s Lane until you get to the Bailey Bridge (which crosses the River Blyth). You’re supposed to disembark and walk your bike over the bridge, but this gives you a chance to admire the sweeping views across the harbour.

You’re now in Walberswick. Continue on Palmer’s Lane, past cattle and marshland until you get to The Street. Turn left and follow the road towards the beach. From here, the day is yours!

For lunch, get a pint of Adnams and some fish and chips at The Bell or The Anchor. Or, you’ll pass The Black Dog Deli; a great spot for picnic goodies.

On the return leg you will have to retrace your ride for part of the way. When you get to the Southwold side of the Bailey Bridge, instead of continuing straight, turn right along a path (not marked on Google Maps) and continue past the Harbour Inn and along Southwold Harbour. At the end of the road, turn left onto Ferry Road. This takes you back in to the town centre.

It’s short, simple but captures much of the best parts of the local area.

See our photos below for an idea of the scenery.
